What is Physical Therapy

Physical therapy involves the interaction between therapist, patients, and other health care professionals, families, caregivers, and communities in a process where movement potential is assessed and diagnosed and goals are agreed upon.  Physical therapists are healthcare professionals who diagnose and treat individuals of all ages.  These patients could potentially have medical problems or other health-related conditions, illnesses, or injuries that limit their ability to move and perform functional activities.  Physical Therapists use an individual's history and physical examination to arrive at a diagnosis and establish a treatment plan.  When necessary, they also incorporate the results of laboratory and imaging studies.  Physical therapy management commonly includes prescription of or assistance with specific exercises, manual therapy, education, manipulation and other interventions.  A physical therapist works with patients to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs.  They develop fitness and wellness programs that allow a patient a healthier and more active lifestyle.  It is their goal to provide services to individuals that develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout each patient's lifespan.
