Physical Medicine/Physiatry

What is Physiatry?

A medical specialty in which a physician’s focus is to manage, improve quality of life, and improve functional ability of individuals with physical impairments and disabilities secondary to disease, trauma, or degeneration of muscles, tissues, bones, or neurological complications. Physiatrists diagnosis and treat a patient’s current injury and then work on helping them to prevent new ones.

The emphasis of a physiatrist is to treat the whole person and not just a diagnosis. They assist their patients with all associated complications of a diagnosis such as, depression, family education, modifications and compensation techniques. A physiatrist makes sure a patient understands their condition so they can take control of their lives. They assist individuals to function adequately in their lives with the limitations of a disease process. There goal is not to help individuals return to their pre-morbid state, but rather be the best they can with their limitations and be functional at home, work, or during recreational activities.

Physiatrist uses a combination approach of: medications, physical modalities, physical training with therapeutic exercise, movement & activities modification, adaptive equipments and assistive device, orthotics, and prosthesis (Non-operative treatments only). They also use an interdiscplinary approach with the assistance of physical therapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, physchologists, speech and language pathologists, and recreation therapists.

Often times physiatrists perform nerve conduction studies which are utilized to assess nervous system dysfunction. The study tests how well the electrical signals are traveling to a nerve and also tests if there is any problem with a muscle.
